Ahjahna Graham

Hometown: Phoenix

Role: Legislative Research Analyst, Health and Human Services Committee, Arizona House of Representatives

Years of legislative service: Six

One thing she loves about her state: “I can wear flip-flops any time of the year due to Arizona’s wonderful sunny weather.”

Why did you choose to work at the Legislature?

After interning at the Legislature, I knew I wanted to work in this environment. I enjoy listening to the legislators debate and having the opportunity to witness policymaking firsthand. Whether it’s helping constituents or summarizing legislation, I’m always learning something new, and I feel a sense of pride each time I come to work and see our beautiful state Capitol.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

Being able to maintain a positive attitude during stressful times. I’m always smiling, laughing and providing words of encouragement to my peers. Working in a fast-paced environment where you’re meeting deadlines and attending multiple meetings can feel overwhelming at times. However, I always try to leave my office acknowledging the tasks that I accomplish each day, rather than worry about the next.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

“Never stop learning.” There is always a new topic or process to learn about, and I’m not afraid to ask questions. By asking questions I become more knowledgeable about my policy area and a better problem-solver.

Who or what inspires you?

My mom inspires me. She’s always encouraged me to pursue my goals, and I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for her love and support.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I’m currently watching “House of the Dragon,” which is the prequel to “Game of Thrones.” I plan to read George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” since I can’t wait until 2024 to watch season two!
