Staff Snapshots | Jessica Geary

January 24, 2023

Hometown: Juneau, Alaska

Role: Executive Director, Legislative Affairs Agency

Years of legislative service: 22

Skill or talent she’s most proud of: “My ability to remain diplomatic.”

Why did you choose to work at the Legislature?

In a way, the Legislature chose me. I started as a high school intern, continued working part time while in college and ended up making a career out of supporting this unique institution.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

Work-life balance is so important—a job like mine will swallow you whole if you let it.

Who or what inspires you?

My kids inspire me. I have three teenagers, who are each so different, and it is so fascinating to watch them grow into adults.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

Alaska has wonderful people and is culturally diverse. Most important, Alaskans are always willing to come together and help each other out, regardless of what region they are from.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I am currently pretty invested in the “Yellowstone” series and the entire Dutton family story.

These email responses have been lightly edited for length and clarity.

For its “Staff Snapshots” series, State Legislatures News is asking legislative staff about their role in the legislature. If you’d like to suggest a staffer for this series, please email Holly South at NCSL.
